Going through an IRS audit can be an overwhelming experience. Things can rapidly get out of hand if you fail to take appropriate action when the IRS presents you with a tax bill or other document that you disagree with. If you have been subject to an IRS tax investigation and aren’t happy with the findings, there is still a way to set things right. Through IRS audit reconsideration, you can get your case reopened for review. If you are a resident of Dallas, consulting a tax attorney in Dallas, Texas, might be the best option for you to get a resolution. In this blog, we take a closer look at the IRS audit reconsideration.

Eligibility criteria to request an audit reconsideration

You must meet the set criteria to qualify for an audit reconsideration. If any or all of the following apply to you, you may submit a request for an IRS audit reconsideration, according to IRS Publication 3598:

  • You did not appear for your audit
  • You moved and did not receive correspondence from the IRS
  • You have additional information to present that you did not provide during your original audit
  • You do not agree with the assessment from the audit

To know if you are eligible for IRS audit consideration, consult a Dallas tax resolution and settlement attorney.

What is the benefit of submitting a request for audit reconsideration?

The biggest benefit of an IRS audit reconsideration is that it enables taxpayers to provide fresh evidence that could refute the IRS’ initial audit report. If you are successful, you can reduce or eliminate your tax liability resulting from the audit. Having a qualified and experienced Dallas IRS tax lawyer by your side improves your chances of getting a favorable result when dealing with IRS tax investigations.

Documentation required for audit reconsideration

A tax attorney in Dallas, Texas, can help you acquire and organize the required documents to make the whole affair easier. It always helps to know what documents to present to the IRS, instead of depending entirely on attorneys. To file a request for audit reconsideration, you’ll need to provide the IRS with the following documents:

  • A copy of your audit report (IRS Form 4549)
  • Copies of the new documentation that supports your position — copies only, originals will be rejected
  • IRS Form 12661, Disputed Issue Verification

It is worth noting that when sending your audit reconsideration documents, you must provide your TIN (tax identification number) and mention the respective tax year on each page filed.

I would like to thank Mr. Nick and his staff for the superb help that I received from them. My IRS problem was resolved quickly and efficiently. It took 2 visits to convince me that I was over my head. I thought that I could call the IRS, appeal my tax notices and settle on a payment plan on my own. After many phone calls to the IRS, waiting sometimes more than 4 hours with no resolution to speak of, it proved to be extremely difficult and stressful. Revisiting Mr. Nick was a huge wake up call. My account was reviewed, and a payment plan was established with the IRS within a week. I will be forever grateful to the staff who worked on my case and especially to Lorna who listened to me vent while going through this painful process.

I cannot say enough good things about Nick and his team. When I first met with Nick he was up front, honest, friendly and efficient. When I worked with one of his attorneys, Eric B, I was just as pleased. All of the staff there are nice and very helpful. I wish I hadn't waited so long to get help with my issue. Over 6yrs I tried getting through and getting anywhere with the IRS and hardly made any progress. I know this may not be the case for all, and even I thought it would take longer than it did, but 3mos and they had my situation straightened out. I still can't believe it. Thank you thank you THANK YOU for all that you did for me. This is a huge burden gone out of my life now thanks to you. If anyone needs help out there, I know you may not want to shell out more money to get their help but it may just save you in the long run.

During a time in which competent, professional service at a fair price seems to have disappeared, Mr. Nemeth and his team are a refreshing breath of fresh air. From my first phone call to the final settlement of our case with a non-responsive IRS, they under-promised, over-delivered and were in constant courteous contact to make sure we knew exactly what was happening and where we stood.I hope to never need their services again, but, should I receive another friendly letter from the IRS...I know who to call!
